After attracting wide critical acclaim at Ed Fringe in 1977, his first conspicuous television success was in BBC's satirical comedy show 'Not The Nine O'Clock News'. He embarked on his writing career shortly after, and wrote the situation comedy 'Black Adder'. 1989 saw him star as the now world-renowned Mr Bean for the first time, which was met with immense critical acclaim, and still lives on today in appearances and a cartoon series, voiced by the man himself.
